SMS 7th Grade Students Participate in VFW's Patriot's Pen Essay Contest

Eleven Shelbyville Middle School 7th grade students were recognized as the local winners of the Veterans of Foreign War Patriot's Pen Essay Contest.  Approximately 70 SMS seventh grade students participated in the contest.  Participants wrote a 300-400 word essay on the theme "citizenship," in which they explained their ideas about the rights and responsibilities of citizenship in the United States.  The Patriot's Pen contest is an annual national writing contest sponsored each fall by the VFW.  Each year the local winners' essays are entered into the district contest.  Each of the students listed below received an award from the local VFW.
 
This year's first place winner is Shannon Bailey.  The second place winner is Julie Timura.  Both girls will represent Shelby County in the district contest.
 
Other winners from SMS include:  Briana Gibson, Meghan Thornburg, Brooke Smith,  Michelle Murrugarra, Tanner Hunt, Ashley Petitt, Katie Preilis, Kayleb Gobel and Kyler Stephenson
